This train, the subject of numerous TV documentaries, was originally constructed for transporting iron ore and runs on a unique track from Nouadhibou to Zouerate. Not only is it the longest train in the world with 200 wagons stretching for 2 km but it is also the heaviest, weighing 20,000 tonnes, and the slowest with a speed of 15 to 18 hours for a distance of 650 km. Three trains run a day and the only wagon for passengers is situated at the end of the train. For the Mauritanians, the price of a ticket in the passenger wagon is expensive, so they prefer the mineral wagons, whether empty or full, as they are free. Three trains run a day and stop at Choum and the convoy crossings. Waiting can be long due to breakdowns and sand on the tracks, so the time of the voyage is indeterminable… An airconditioned, double-storied, auto-rail with panoramic viewing, runs from Nouadhibou to Zouerate. It only transports organised tourist groups and stops at Ben Amira (an imposing monolith) and the Oasis of Char between Zouerate and Choum |
