| Another name to be reckoned with is the director, Abderrahmane Sissako. Born in Mali, he passed through Nouadhibou, returned there to film, before leaving for Russia to study cinema. He has directed numerous films in which he returns to his African roots and his life. “La Vie sur Terre” directed in 1998, was followed by the release of “En attendant le Bonheur” directed in 2001. He has made his home in France. |
“En attendant le Bonheur” A young man named Abdallah, refinds his mother in Nouadhibou while waiting his departure to Europe. In this place of exile where he does not understand the language, he tries to understand the universe surrounding him. Nana, a young, sensuous woman attempts to seduce Makan, dreaming like him, to leave the country. Maata, an old fisherman, and his young mischievous apprentice, Khadra, help Makan to emerge from his isolation and teach him the local |
dialect. Emotions and cultures cross and separate – an eye to the horizon while waiting for a hypothetical happiness. |
