Bush taxis, which, in our occidental way of thinking is symbolic of Africa, is part of the Mauritanian landscape. They have the advantage of being able to circulate in most of the inhabited areas of Mauritania. From Nouakchott to Oualata you will find them in nearly all the towns and villages. They were first used by the villagers wanting to go from the towns to the villages so they will probably refuse to take you towards the saharian desert zones or the remote Adrar plateaux which is away from their habitual circuit. Fares range between 600 and 1000 UM (2-4 euros) per 100 km depending the number of people travelling, the nature of the road or track, type of vehicle, and the seating conditions (sitting in a cabin or standing on the running-board of a pick-up…). |
