Mauritanian money is the ouguiya (UM), index-linked to the dollar. A non-convertible money created in 1972 which you can only change in the country. Methods of payment In the large towns you can pay in euros (preferred) or dollars. Better to have cash than travellers cheques. To change your money refer to the banks or the money exchange agencies (see list). ATTENTION: There are no ATM’s for credit cards. They exist only in the grand hotels, certain banks and airline |
companies. The declaring of purchases is no longer obligatory since the Decree No. 006/98 was issued by the Central Bank. |
