To give you some idea of the value of Mauritanian money: 1 euro = approx. 340 ouguiya mauritanian (to facilitate the buying power = 300 ouguiya). The exchange rate between the euro and the dollar varies, so it is preferable to consult the Banque Centrale de Mauritanie site before departure. The bank commission on currency exchange is 2%
It is against the law to leave Mauritania with local money – you risk to have problems with the local authorities. If you enter Mauritania from Mali or Senegal, you must not be in possession of CFA francs. The trick is to work out your budget beforehand.
