| Festivals and holidays of Mauritania |
| Friday and Saturday are the weekends and generally respected, especially in the small towns. A good idea to take note of this when organising your holiday. |
Dates of the major festivals: • January 1: New Year’s Day • May 1: Workers’ Day • May 25: Organisation of African Unity Day • During July and August, in the desert oases, the Mauritanians celebrate the Guetna (Celebration of the Dates). The nomads and settlers leave their towns and go to the oases to cut the dates. This event is symbolic of the nomad culture and paves the way for numerous fetes. • November 28: Independence Day The dates of the religious festivals vary because the Muslim calendar is lunar. • The Muslim New Year • L’Aid al Fitr (End of Ramadan) • L’Aid al Adha (Fete du Mouton) (Slaughtering of the Lamb) • L’Aid al Maouloud: (Birth of the Prophet, Mohamed) |
