The arab-berber and black-african culture is shown in the traditional dressing. These light garments adapt to the lifestyle of the nomad, protect them from the sun, the heat and sandstorms. A few of these garments are: • The melahfa. A voile made from a very light fabric and traditionally dyed in Kaedi. Also made in a heavier fabric in indigo called ‘niila”. • The Darraa. Boubou made from a fabric called “bazin”. Traditionally blue, although sometimes white, with a large front |
pocket embroidered in yellow. • The Haouli. Called ‘cheche’ in the Maghrebi countries. A piece of rectangular fabric that serves as a turban. Indispensable in the desert. Ask the seller how to wind and knot it around your head. • The Nails. Sandals in gazelle leather and authentic shoes of the desert men, now impossible to find. These days they are made in sheepskin • The Seroual. Bouffant pants worn with a one-pocket boubou (exclusively male). Very comfortable and airy in summer. Colours white, blue or black. Traditionally clinched at the waist with a leather belt. • The Pagne: Rectangular cotton fabric in many colours that the black-african women knot at the waist and drape over a long skirt. The bodice is a boubou and a knotted head scarf completes the dress |
