| The custom of producing craft and utilitarian objects used in the daily life by the majority of the population is deeply rooted in the Mauritania tradition. Each region has its own special technique, craft and decoration. For example: chests from Mederdra, pottery from Oualata and Kaedi, dying from Kaedi, mats from Inchiri and beds “khabta” from Hodh in the East. The Mauritania craftsmen work mainly in acacia wood, brass, silver, gold, aluminum from the mines and leather from camel, goat or cow. |

The Carpets of Mauritania
Although a relatively new industry, it is impossible to ignore the beauty of Mauritania carpets woven with patterns representing the artistic richness of a centuries-old cultural heritage. The designs of a traditional carpet, hand woven from camel hair in natural colours, are inspired by the motifs found on the local chests, jewellery, cushions and traditional musical instruments…
